Kohunlich Ruins Tour

Join us in this expedition to the ruins of Kohunlich and admire one of the most studied sites in the area. Walk through the ruins of this ancient Maya ceremonial center and climb its spectacular temple dedicated to the Sun God.

We'll explore one of the most outstanding sites in the area and discover the intricate decoration of one of its temples consisting of stucco masks that are part of a symbolic decoration system loaded with cosmic elements that reflect the importance of the cosmos for the ancient Maya.

Kohunlich consists of mainly residential complexes and palaces that present a very elaborated architecture, evidence of the sophistication, importance and status of the families that once lived there.

During this guided tour you'll learn about the Maya social, political and religious organization and will be transported back to the glorious days of this ancient Maya city.

This tour departs from The Native Choice Kiosk, a few steps outside the port. Tour confirmations include easy to follow directions, contact numbers and a map.

Payment information
A minimum deposit of $15.00USD per person is required to confirm spaces for this tour.
Deposits are fully refundable if for any reason your cruise ship doesn't call port at all in Costa Maya.
Online payment of the reservation total or remaining balance is possible within 21 days (3 weeks) before the tour.

Booking fee
We don't charge booking fees nor any other extra fees.

Cancellation policy
2 days before the tour to avoid a cancellation fee of $15.00USD per person.

Level of exertion
This is a walking tour that requires a good level of fitness and health. Participants must be comfortable with outdoors, be able to walk on uneven grounds under the jungle and expect moderate physical activity.
Climbing to the top of the temples is optional, it could be challenging and is not recommended for anyone with fear of heights.

Weather
This tour operates rain or shine.

Restrictions
We require that your cruise ship stays in port for at least 8 hours to participate in this tour.
This tour isn't suitable for people with difficulties to walk and isn't wheelchair accessible.
This tour isn't recommended for children ages 5 y/o or younger due to the travel time involved, however, small children can participate if it's reserved privately.
There's a $5.00USD copyright fee (not included in the tour price) for the use of video cameras at Kohunlich, this fee is paid directly at the site.
Tripods and drones aren't allowed into the site.

Wear comfortable walking shoes.
Bring a hat and sun screen if you visit during the summer.
Bring extra cash just in case you want to buy a snack.

The ride from Costa Maya to Kohunlich Ruins takes around 1 hour and 50 minutes. Most of the way the road is fairly new and in perfect conditions, however, the last 9KM the road becomes narrow and during the rainy season it could get a little bumpy.

Kohunlich, involves a considerable amount of walking since some sections could be away from the others. Expect to walk more than one mile to see all areas open to the public.

This tour is suitable for anyone who enjoys adventure and children are always welcome to join as long as parents are aware of the travel time involved in this tour. At the site, participants of all ages enjoy the experience of walking and climbing this old Maya city, where it's sometimes possible to observe (or hear) howler monkeys.

It's possible to climb most of the buildings.

For the moment, other than bathrooms, there aren't other services available at Kohunlich.

This is a long tour so we include a box lunch and we can also make a quick stop at Bacalar town on the way to and from the ruins for our guests to take a break, use bathrooms and, optionally, grab a quick snack
