Dzibanche is believed to be the earliest capital of the powerful Kaan, or Snake, dynasty. This dynasty went on to become one of the most dominant powers in the Maya world, later moving its seat of power to the city of Calakmul. The site was first settled as early as 200 B.C., but it rose to prominence during the Early Classic period (250-600 A.D.). It was during this time that the Kaan dynasty established its power and influence, expanding its territory and engaging in conflicts with other major Maya cities, including its rival, Tikal.
Dzibanche is known for its Petén-style architecture and impressive structures, such as the Temple of the Captives, which features a hieroglyphic stairway depicting bound captives. Recent excavations uncovered stunning stucco reliefs on a ball court, providing new insights into the dynasty's mythological beliefs and divine lineage.
Dzibanche's power waned after the Kaan dynasty moved its capital to Calakmul around the end of the 6th century. However, the site was not immediately abandoned and was one of the last Maya cities to create a dated hieroglyphic text, with the latest known one dating to 909 A.D.
The journey from Costa Maya to Dzibanche takes approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes. Please note that recent road construction may cause some minor discomfort during a short stretch of the journey. Additionally, the last leg of the road can be narrow and potentially bumpy during the rainy season.
Come prepared for a moderate amount of walking, as the site covers a significant area. While the paths are well-maintained, exploring the various structures and hidden gems may involve some distance. Comfortable footwear is recommended.
While children are welcome, please note that the tour involves moderate walking and climbing. Parents are encouraged to assess their child's ability to participate in such activities. At the site, guests of all ages can enjoy exploring the ancient ruins, including the opportunity to spot (or hear) howler monkeys.
Many of the site's structures offer opportunities for climbing, allowing you to experience the ancient Maya world from a unique perspective.
This is a comprehensive tour that includes refreshments for your convenience. If time allows, we may also make a brief stop in Bacalar at Holly Margarita Lake Shore Club, allowing you to freshen up, use restroom facilities, and enjoy a quick snack.
